For most regularly used home driveways, telescopic bollards are a practical option because they retract into the ground when access is required and do not need to be carried away or stored.

The best bollard will depend on the width of your driveway, the vehicles being protected, how often you need access and the level of security required. If you are unsure, contact Northern Bollards and we can recommend a suitable option.

A raised and locked driveway bollard creates a physical barrier between your vehicle and the road, making it more difficult for a vehicle to simply be driven off the property.

No security measure can guarantee that a vehicle will not be stolen, so we recommend using bollards alongside sensible vehicle security such as secure key storage, steering locks, alarms, trackers and CCTV where appropriate.

The number of bollards you need depends on the width and layout of your driveway.

A narrow entrance may only require one correctly positioned bollard, while a wider driveway will often need two or more to prevent a vehicle from simply manoeuvring around the barrier.

If you send us a photograph and approximate width of your driveway, we can advise on the number and positioning of bollards required.

In many cases, a manually operated driveway bollard positioned entirely within a private residential property will not require planning permission.

However, different considerations can apply if the property is listed, within a conservation area, has shared access, is close to a pavement or public highway, or is subject to existing planning restrictions.

Yes. Security bollards can be installed into most common driveway surfaces including block paving, tarmac and concrete.

The installation method will vary depending on the surface and the bollard being fitted. For telescopic bollards, excavation is required for the below-ground housing before the surrounding driveway is reinstated.

We will also need to consider drainage and any underground pipes, cables or other services within the proposed installation area.

The cost depends on the type of bollard, its construction and the number required.

Our black bollards are normally kept in stock and can typically be installed within 2–5 days.

Dark grey, white and yellow bollards usually have an installation lead time of around 7–10 days because they require the chosen finish to be prepared.

Installation dates are weather dependent. Unfortunately, we cannot carry out the necessary groundwork and installation in wet or rainy conditions.

The terms are often used to describe the same general type of bollard.

A telescopic bollard retracts vertically into a housing installed beneath the ground. When access is required, the post is unlocked and lowered into the driveway. When security is needed, it is pulled back up and locked into position.

This makes telescopic bollards particularly useful for driveways and entrances that are opened regularly.

Yes. Telescopic bollards are designed for regular use and remain permanently installed within the driveway.

Rather than removing and storing the complete bollard, you simply unlock it and lower it into its underground housing when you need vehicle access. Once your vehicle is parked, the bollard can be raised and locked again.

The exact weight and operation will vary between models, so we can help you choose a bollard that is suitable for the people who will be using it.

Yes. If you are having two or more compatible bollards installed, they can be supplied keyed alike so that one key operates each bollard.

Manual security bollards generally require relatively little maintenance, but locks and moving components should be kept clean and free from excessive dirt and debris.

For telescopic bollards, leaves, grit and mud should not be allowed to build up around the below-ground mechanism or drainage area.

If a bollard becomes unusually stiff or difficult to operate, avoid forcing it and contact us for advice.
